THE TWIG lUewpmper of the StmdemU •/ Meredith College VOL. LX. NO. 9 RALEIGH. NORTH CAROLINA 27811 NOVEMBER 11. 1981 Meredith security: a protection force or an errand service by Ann Stringfield Open up the sewing lab, go to the bank for the Supply Store, grant permission for a car on campus - these are the things Dan Shattuck, Chief of the Meredith Security Force was asked to do during the first 15 minutes of our interview. Meredith has a security force of twelve men, ten of which work for Meredith on a by Lisa Sorrels Those who attended the November Convocation expected to hear William Hamilton speak on the topic “20th Century American Humor.” They were disappointed. Hamilton told a few anecdotes, fumbled for words, and then concluded by reading portions of the first scene of one of his newest plays. The abbreviated convocation began with the playwright’s explanation that he was phasing out drawing in favor of writing. Next he told the story of how he began drawing for The New Yorker. by Melody West Because of a request from the faculty, the Instruction Committee plans to evaluate the effectiveness of self scheduled exams. The committee will examine these exams to see if they are being used properly by both students and instructors. The decision of the committee to evaluate the self-scheduled exams was prompted by a faculty response that some students may not be using these exams properly. However, there will be no immediate action taken part-time basis. These men have been trained by the Raleigh Police Academy, the SBI (State Bureau of Investigation) and Dan Shattuck himself. They have received instruction in CPR (Cardio-pulmona^ Resuscitation), first aid and fire prevention. Each has had range training. These are things for which Security is trained, but what does None of this was delivered from a prepared speech. Hamilton then read sections from the first scene of one of his plays, all the while patronizing his listeners by saying, “No, I can’t read that” before skipping some of the dialogue. As Steve Martin said, “Comedy is not pretty.” After approximately half an hour Hamilton stopp^ and moved on to the Fireside Lounge for questions. But as he concluded his remarks in Jones Auditorium, he stated that life has many surprises between our plans and what really happens. Meredith’s on the evaluation of these exams; first, the committee wants to conduct a study of the effectiveness of the class- instructor evaluation forms. Therefore, we will have self scheduled exams this semester. The Instruction Committee may be interested in hearing students’ views on the self-scheduled exams. If you would like your opinion known to the committee, please contact student members Susie Narron (202 Barefoot) or Pat Strickland (217 Barefoot). Security actually do? In the daytime. Security functions as a parking master of ceremonies and an errand service. There are two guards on duty during the day. One is a parking marshall usually, stationed in the Johnson Hall area. The other is Dan Shattuck whose daytime activities include going to the bank for the Supply Store and the Accounting office and November Convocation was certainly a case in point. Five students, three faculty members, and a business and civic leader in the Raleigh community were initiated into Gamma Rho Chapter of Delta Mu Delta, national honor society in business administration, on Friday night November 6. The Initiation banquet was held at Ballentine’s Buffet and was attended by members, initiates, and their parents and spouses. Student initiates were: Linda Barker, Anne Coulbourn, Donna Stroud, Cecilia Whitley, and Carolyn Wolf. Faculty initiates were: Richard Behrman, Tony St. Mary’s makes donation by Linda Sellers St. Mary’s College has made a donation to the Meredith Chapel fund, according to Mr. Larry Williams, College Minister at Meredith. The donation of $100 came from the students and faculty of St. Mary's with the hope that Meredith's chapel becomes as dear to our campus as St. Mary’s chapel has become to them. The donation was received at the first of October from Starke Dillard, Chaplain at St. Mary’s. running errands in general. Mr. Shattuck says that he does not mind doing these things “if that’s what Meredith wants.” He does, however, admit that “it would look kind of bad if there was a crime committed on campus and I was at the bank.” There is a bit more activity at night. The dorms have to be checked every hour and outer buildings, grounds and the president’s house have to be checked every other hour. There are two guards on duty from six p.m. to six a.m. with one additional guard working the hours from ten imtil two to help unlock doors for the “steady, stream of girls.” Shattuck says that three guards at night is adequate Bledsoe, and Surinda Sandhu. Ronald G. Stamey was Inducted as an honorary member and was also the banquet speaker. Mr. Stamey Is District Manager of Southern Bell and President of the Raleigh Chamber of coverage under most circumstances. There could tie a problem, however, if the boiler malfunctions. Security checks the boiler every 30 minutes. If the boiler is experiencing difficulties, it may take two or three men to fix it. This would leave Meredith in a rather vulnerable position. Although Security receives great cooperation from the Meredith community, Shattuck feels that no one at Meredith takes security seriously. “People lean on us a little too much to do things other than security,” says Shattuck. Perhaps the question is not how effective Meredith security is but how effective Meredith wants it to be. Commerce. He is also Secretary-Treasurer of Group Fifty in Raleigh and is a member of the Boards of Director of several civic and corporate boards, including the Board of Associates for Meredith College.
